DEFECTS IN CONTINUOUS MEDIA
Review: Defects often determine the mechanical and other properties of materials to a large extent. An understanding of these ordering imperfections would therefore facilitate the design of improved materials. Using nematic liquid crystals as an example, the various theoretical approaches to the description of defects are described and a correlation with the information obtained through experiment allows the success of the methods to be assessed.
