Electronic effects of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents at the para position of the phenyl moieties of BINAP ligands were studied towards asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-(acylamino)acrylic acids. Enantiomeric excesses varied as a linear relationship towards Hammett coefficients sigma(p) of electron-donating groups between 0 and -0.63. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
