The title compound, a new anthracene-containing triptycene derivative, was synthesized. The crystal structure shows its strained configuration and intermolecular pi-pi stacking arrangement. Photochemical [4 + 4] dimerization occurs easily in solution and in the solid state, even under visible-light irradiation.
