Treatment of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals with Surface Modified NF Membrane
This study focused on the surface polymerization of nanofiltration membrane to improve the rejection of endocrine disruption chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Methacrylic acid (MA) was used as a monomer to make the membrane surface more hydrophilic and negatively-charged. Then, the NF membrane was further modified using ethylene diamine as a cross-linker and water soluble carbodiimide as a coupling agent. which allows the formation of amide bond between carboxyl group and primary amine group. Finally, succinic acid was used to increase negatively-charged funtional groups on the NF surface. The rejections of micro-organic pollutants for original and modified membranes were compared and discussed in terms of surface properties including hydrophilicity, zeta potential, and effective pore diameter as well as physico-chemical properties of target compounds.
