Fabrication of a Glass-Bonded Zeolite Waste Form for Waste LiCl Salt
E-mail:
A waste LiCl salt generated from an electrolytic reduction process of a spent oxide fuel could be incorporated with zeolite A and a glass frit to form a glass-bonded zeolite waste form through blending of the waste LiCl salt with zeolite A, mixing it with the glass frit, and finally thermal treatment at 1188 K. During the blending at 923 K, the crystalline phase of the zeolite A changed into a Li-A or a sodium chloride form of sodalite, according to the mixing ratio of the LiCl salt to zeolite A. Zeolite A could be loaded with a maximum of 3.8 Cl- ions per pseudo unit cell of the zeolite. To produce a high integral waste form, with a major crystalline phase of a sodium chloride form of sodalite and a free chloride content below 1 wt%, the mixing ratio of waste LiCl salt to zeolite A should be maintained below 0.25; consolidation with a glass frit above 1188 K is also necessary.
