Possibilities of CO2 sequestration by storage in geological media of major deep aquifers in Poland
Location of major CO2 emission point sources (the ones responsible for emission of more than 500 kT per year), representing energy sector and industry, is presented on the background of geological structure of Poland. Analysis of reservoir distribution and its sedimentary rocks properties showed that the best conditions for sequestration Of CO2 by underground storage may be found in deep saline aquifers related to Lower Cretaceous, Lower Jurassic and Lower Triassic sedimentary rock series. Seventeen deep structures (anticlines and tectonic troughs) developed in these rocks were selected as sites suitable for CO2 underground storage, feasible also because of their location that is close to 18 out of 53 major CO2 emission point sources.
