Epoxidation of carbon double bond using atmospheric non-equilibrium oxygen plasma
This study describes the epoxidation of 1-decene with atmospheric pressure glow plasma (APGP). The experiment was carried out by exposing liquid 1-decene to oxygen plasma jet. The results confirmed the predominant formation of 1,2-epoxydecane, 1-decanal, 1-nonanal, and 2-decanone, in which the epoxide was most produced. The yields of the products were investigated by changing parameters including reaction time, distance between the tip of the tube and the liquid surface, flow rates of oxygen and argon, and thermostat temperature. Reaction mechanism was discussed with the effects of these experimental parameters on the yields. The study suggested the plasma oxidation with APGP would be attractive for the partial oxidation of organic compounds under atmospheric pressure without catalysts. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
