Separation Characteristics of an Inclined Column Crystallizer
With the epsilon-caprolactam-water simple eutectic system, purification by column crystallization was performed under conditions of total reflux with normal and inclined settings of the column. By inclining a column, enhancement of settling of the slurry was expected. The inclined column was found to provide stable operation in comparison with the normal one in that the settling of the slurry in the column was smooth. Analysis on the basis of an axial dispersion model leads to the conclusions that, contrary to expectation, the dispersion coefficients in the inclined column were smaller than those in the normal one and that the purity at the bottom was higher in the normal column. However, it was suggested that the purity would be higher if adequate operating conditions were selected.
