Mass-Transfer of Solubilized Solutes in Aqueous Micellar Solutions
The mass transfer of solubilized solute in the aqueous micellar solution was modelled by allowing for the distribution of solute between micellar phase and bulk phase (aqueous phase outside micelles), the diffusion of solute itself in the bulk phase, the diffusion of solute incorporated with micelles and the volume fraction of micelles. The total diffusivity and total mass transfer coefficient of solute in the aqueous micellar solution were a function of the distribution coefficient of solute between both phases, the ratio of diffusivity of solute incorporated with micelles to that of solute in the bulk phase, and the volume fraction of micelles. The total diffusivities and total mass transfer coefficients of solutes were measured using a diaphragm cell and an agitated vessel with a flat interface, respectively, for the several solute-aqueous micellar solution systems. The observed values were in good agreement with the model predictions, the validity of the proposed model being verified.
