Materials development has been proceeding at a tremendous rate over the past decade. Thus to write a comprehensive review of these developments would be impossible in the context of this article. Here we review some of the notable achievements in materials development in the field of ceramics and metals and look briefly towards the future. For each material class aspects of material formulation development and fabrication are discussed illustrating each with examples.
