The paper reviews the development of process systems engineering from a personal view-point, selecting concepts from the past which have given rise to new paradigms, and hence led to improved understanding or advances in solution techniques, but which either still pose unresolved problems or hold the promise of further developments. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd.
