Particle formation by turbulent mixing with supercritical antisolvent
A supercritical antisolvent precipitation process is investigated. The objective of the Study is related to production of high purity powders with controlled particle size for pharmaceutical and industrial purposes. The model of antisolvent precipitation in turbulent flows is proposed and applied to interpret experimental data. The method combines the non-equilibrium model for scalar dissipation with the conditional moment closure based on probability density function Beta (the Beta PDF). The method is based on expressing the local concentration of the precipitated substance as a function of dimensionless concentration of the solvent (interpreted as a passive scalar) and application of the single precipitation progress variable. The proposed method has been implemented into the CFD code to constitute the complete procedure for prediction of the course of particle formation processes. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
