Sustainable water treatment and chlorine production in emergency conditions in South Iraq
The water sector in Iraq and particularly in the south of the country is one of the priorities of the United Nations action plan. The water shortage is an old problem of the area, but the recent conflict has made the situation worse. Currently many NGOs are working in the rehabilitation of water treatment plants in the District of Basra. The system used is sand filtration with pressurized filters in a type of plant called a compact nit, with a modular designed to be easily installed and transferred. The main problem of this system is the supply of chemicals for the correct treatment. It usesd gaseous chlorine under pressure, which is not easy to find in the current emergency situation and especially with the difficulties of dealing with rural locations far from main roads. A possible solution was studied with the self-production of chlorine starting from salty water.
