Historically, the hardest and most-abrasive rock formations have been drilled with roller-cone insert bits. Combining advanced polycrystalline-diamond-compact (PDC)-bit designs with state-of-the-art cutter technology has opened many new applications for PDC bits. Because of this new technology, PDC bits have become a practical alternative for drilling hard rock and provide a significant reduction in cost per foot.
