Impedance Studies of the Solid Electrolyte Interface of Carbon Anodes in Lithium Ion Batteries

The electrochemical properties of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) between the carbon anode and the electrolyte were examined by impedance spectroscopy. Impedance spectroscopy is generally useful for studying the interface between two different phases. The SEI layer was investigated using a unique technique involving d.c. potential steps of the carbon anode. The impedance spectra provided useful information, not only on the electrochemical properties of the SEI layer but also on the relationship between the SEI and the carbon anode, although these components were not investigated in detail. For a clear impedance analysis, we compared two different SEI layers formed on the carbon anode in two different electrolyte systems. Impedance spectra for the SEI layers were compared and analyzed.
