Rheo-optical measurements of the elongational flow of aqueous polymer solutions
An opposed jets rheometer was used to investigate the elongational viscosity as a function of the strain rate for dilute aqueous solutions of polyvinylformamide and polyacrylamide. Critical strain rates at which the enhancement in elongational viscosity occurs were determined for both systems, The influence of the polymer concentration on the elongational viscosity was investigated. The measurements were performed with polymer concentrations less than the critical polymer concentration c(p)(*). In order to assess the deformation and orientation of the macromolecules, flow-induced birefringence was measured simultaneously.
