The Investigation of Curl and Cockle in Copy Paper from Three Different Papermachine Types
The investigation focused on understanding how and why the changes in moisture content of copypaper affect curl and cockle for three former types; Fourdrinier, hybrid, and gap former. The primary factor controlling the structure of paper is the forming zone in papermachines. The layered anisotropy and dominant fiber orientation are expected to vary with different forming sections, with the turbulence level in the head box and jet/wire ratio. The copy papers were examined during dehydration from 5% moisture content to 1.5%. The principal tool used to measure the dimensional change in the copypaper was Stereo, the three dimensional digital image system. The hygroexpansion coefficients were compared to anisotropy and jet/wire ratio for the crossmachine direction on the tops and bottoms of the sheets during dehydration. Gap former was superior to other types in terms of curl. However, jet/wire ratio has effect on all types of formers in terms of cockle.
