Cure Kinetics of Liquid Crystalline Epoxide with Triaromatic Azomethine Mesogen

Liquid crystalline epoxide (LCE) with triaromatic azomethine mesogen was synthesized and cured with 4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA) in the epoxide/amine molar ratio of 1/1, 3/2 and 2/1. The influence of the molar ratio on the curing was studied by Kissinger equation through DSC analysis in the temperature range of 30~300 ℃. To investigate the reaction between LCE and MDA, FT-IR spectroscopy analysis was carried out. An epoxide group of LCE reacted with an amine group of MDA forming a hydroxyl group which acted as a catalyst on the cure reaction of another epoxide and amine groups. The activation energy, Ea, of LCE/MDA with the molar ratio of 1/1, 3/2 and 2/1 was 52.3, 36.7 and 40.0 kJ/mol, respectively.
