ILLINOIS STATE-UNIVERSITY TO RECYCLE DINING CENTER FOOD AND PAPER WASTES INTO CATTLE FEED
Some Illinois cattle came in for a slight change in their menu, compliments of residence hall students who do not clean their plates. The first practical demonstration in the nation of the recycling technology needed to mix food and paper into a form that can be used for cattle feed is being conducted at Illinois State University under a state-sponsored initiative. Cattle at the Illinois State University farm now eat feed made from recycled food waste and paper from four residence hall dining centers. In what is the first program of its kind in the world, the recycled material is used as silage to feed beef cattle at the University Farm's beef research center. It is believed that no other program has combined food waste and newsprint to serve as cattle feed. The concept of using pulped food waste and ground newsprint to create an ensilage is a new and relatively unexplored idea.
