Rehabilitation of water production facilities of the Ministry of Electricity and Water, State of Bahrain
The Ministry of Electricity and Water of the State of Bahrain is committed to providing its citizens and residents safe and reliable electricity and water services. In line with this commitment the Ministry prepared its 10-Year Master Plan (1996-2005) for the development of power and water production and water transmission facilities. A major part of this plan concerns the review of existing generating plants, present water production facilities and water demand forecasts. Another part of this development plan deals with the future development options and future capacity requirements. One of the options of the former concerns the rehabilitation of the existing plants in order to meet the ever-increasing demand for water in Bahrain. This paper addresses the main rehabilitation works related to the two multi-stage flash (MSF) distiller units 1A and 1B (each with a capacity of 2.5 migd) at the Sitra power and water station (SPWS) which will hopefully extend the service life of these units until 2015. The paper also sheds the light on the measures taken to expand the existing production capacity of the Ras Abu Jarjur reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant by about one-quarter, i.e., from the existing capacity of 11.6 to 14.7 migd.
