The crystal layer growth from a well-mixed melt
The work deals with the layer-based crystallization process from a melt in a stirred vessel. The investigated system was the crystallization of benzyldimethylketale from the binary eutectic system with benzyl. Experimental runs were carried out by using a lab-scale apparatus to measure both the crystal layer growth and the solid purification grade. The experimental results were interpreted by using a crystal layer simulation model based on the integral formulation approach. The effects of the crystal surface undercooling and the impurity segregation in the solid-melt boundary layer were considered. By comparing the experimental results and the values predicted by the model a growth rate expression of the crystal layer was determined.
