Electrochemical dissolution of immobilized alpha-(FexCr1-x)(2)O-3 microparticles
Solid solutions of alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) and alpha-Cr2O3 (eskolaite), alpha-(FexCr1-x)(2)O-3, were synthesized by precipitation of ferric and chromic salts by sodium hydroxide and heating the obtained solids at 1000 degrees C. The phase purity of the samples was checked by X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The oxidative and reductive dissolution of alpha-(FexCr1-x)(2)O-3 was studied using voltamme try of micropatricles immobilized on graphite electrode in 0.1 M HClO4. The anodic dissolution of alpha-(FexCr1-x)(2)O-3 was effectively suppressed at x > 0.5, whereas cathodic dissolution was suppressed at x < 0.75. The results are discussed with respect to the stability of Fe, Cr oxide layers that are responsible for the corrosion resistance of austenitic steels in hydrothermal environment.
