Resonantly amplified vibronic symmetry breaking
The energy dependence of the vibrational branching ratio for exciting one quantum of bending is determined for CO2 4 sigma (-1)(g) photoionization. This nominally forbidden transition becomes allowed for a photoionization transition as a result of instantaneous symmetry breaking due to zero point motion, and is strongly enhanced by a continuum shape resonance.
