A comparison of the permanent electric dipole moments of ZrS and TiS
Optical Stark measurements were performed on the (1,0) C (3)Delta-X (3)Delta band system of titanium monosulfide, (TiS)-Ti-48, and the (0,0) C (1)Sigma(+)-X (1)Sigma(+) band system of isovalent zirconium monosulfide, (ZrS)-Zr-90. The molecules were produced by ablating a metal rod in the presence of a CS2/argon supersonic expansion. The field-free spectrum for (1,0) C (3)Delta(1)-X (3)Delta(1) and (1,0) C (3)Delta(2)-X (3)Delta(2) sub-bands of (TiS)-Ti-48 were analyzed and an improved set of fine structure parameters was determined. The permanent electric dipole moments, mu, for TiS were determined to be 5.75(10) D and 4.41(9) D for the X (3)Delta(1)(upsilon = 0) and C (3)Delta(1)(upsilon = 1) states, respectively, and for ZrS to be 3.86(6) D and 4.71(6) D for the X (1)Sigma(+)(upsilon = 0) and C (1)Sigma(+)(upsilon = 0) states, respectively. A comparison of the transition metal sulfides to their respective oxides is presented.
