Composite solid electrolytes based on beta-alumina ionic conductors are found to be responsive to extremely low oxygen potentials and can be used over a wide range of temperatures and partial pressures of oxygen. Novel sensors for measuring low oxygen potentials in gaseous atmospheres, liquid metals and oxide systems have been developed and their applications in chemical sensing are presented.
