Regulation of electrochemical properties of Fe(II) and Fe(III) thiolate complexes by hydrogen bonding with diamide additive
Associative (1:1) complexation through NH-S hydrogen bonds between (NEt4)(2) [Fe-II(S-2-o-xyl)(2)] (S-2-O-xyl = o-xylene-alpha,alpha'-dithiolate) and a multiamide template, e.g. 2,6-bis(phenylacetylamino)pyridine (Bipapy), results in the positive shift of redox potential in acetonitrile at room temperature. The NOE observation of contact-shifted H-1-NMR signals in the (1:1) complex between S-2-o-xyl 3,6-ArH and Bipapy benzyl 2,6-ArH and its electrospray mass spectrum revealed two-points recognized association through two NH-S hydrogen bonds as well as (NEt4)(2)[Co-II(S-2-o-xyl)(2)]. The association constant for the complex obtained by the electrochemical titration amounts to 220 +/- 30 M-1 at 26 degrees C.
