The up-to-date knowledge on the hydrodenitrification process (HDN) are presented. Heterocyclic nitrogen compounds occurring in heavy oil raw materials and in carbonaceous fluids as well as the mechanisms of their transformation during the HDN process have been discussed. Types of the HDN process catalytic centers and the Hoffmann＇s beta-elimination and nucleophilic substitution as the C-N bond split reaction mechanisms are described.
