Optimization of an adhesive formulation by experimental designs
A glue was formulated in three steps. Firstly the various loads and their ratios were studied by means of the golden section search, which allowed definition of a restricted experimental area independent of the nature of the load. In view of the sedimentation of the loads, surfactants have to be added, and a series of experiments was designed according to Taguchi's method in order to choose the best load/surfactant couple. Modeling of the responses (sedimentation in the adhesive, sticking force and regularity) as a function of load ratio and surfactant ratio allowed definition of an optimal area of formulation. An adhesive was devised whose formulation was included in this area, and whose qualities matched the stability, sticking force? and regularity aimed at by the optimization.
