Novartis the Swiss-based multinational pharmaceutical company, is in the forefront of research into new therapeutic strategies. Like other multinationals, it finds that the most effective way of increasing the size and breadth of its research effort is to form alliances with external academic research groups and with smaller entrepreneurial biotechnology companies.
