Orientational Effects in the Infrared-Spectrum of the Double-Layer Material, Magnesium Aluminum Hydroxide Ferrocyanide
The infrared spectrum of the title compound, examined in a KBr disc, contains two strong overlapping bands in the CN stretching region. In oriented samples of the same material, examined with light traveling along the c axis, the sharper of these bands is absent. This is in accord with a model in which the octahedral ferrocyanide ions are oriented with their individual 3-fold axes parallel to the c axis. The results suggest a general method for determining the orientation of intercalated and exchanged species in layered hosts.
