Single-Phase Region and Physical-Properties of Europium Molybdenum Sulfides
Europium molybdenum sulfides EuxMo6S8-y, known as Chevrel phase compound, were prepared by vacuum sealed technique, and the single phase region was determined at 1000-degrees-C. The nonstoichiometric ranges of europium(x) and sulfur(8-y) varied 1.00 less-than-or-equal-to (x) less-than-or-equal-to 1.05 and 7.40 less-than-or-equal-to (8-y) less-than-or-equal-to 7.50, respectively. The rhombohedral lattice parameters were almost constant with the values of a(R) = 6.55 angstrom and alpha(R) = 89.20-degrees. The magnetic susceptibility obeyed a Curie’s law, and the effective moment was about 7.65mu(B). The electrical resistivity of all the compounds of the EuxMo6S8-y showed the semiconducting behavior.
