Ammonium polyphosphate serving as a halogen-free flame retardant provides a simple means of flameproofing unsaturated polyester resin composites. The use of new, more effective synergist blends in gelcoats also makes it possible to greatly increase the flame resistance of these materials. Such flameproofed composites satisfy the specific fire-safety requirements of railway vehicle construction.
