MICROBIAL SURFACE DESULFURIZATION OF SCRAP RUBBER CRUMB - A CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS MATERIAL RECYCLING OF SCRAP RUBBER
Available concepts for direct substantial recycling of scrap rubber do not correspond to the expected legal ecological objects. The results in this paper show the possibility of microbial desulfurization of the rubber surface layer. This concept is able to complement present process es of rubber recycling. By adding chemolithotrophic microorganisms like Thiobacilli to a suspension of rubber granulate and nutriant solution, the polysufidic sulfur is biochemical oxidized to soluble sulfate. In this kind of microbial treatment, the polymeric chains are not split by the microorganisms. The results are the basis for ongoing investigations to develop a technical process for the production of rubber reclaim.
