Portable Plasma Device for Electric N2O5 Production from Air
Dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), a known oxidizing and nitrating compound, is attractive for a wide range of academic fields but has not yet been used widely, due to its ordinary synthesis methods requiring multiple hazardous raw materials (requiring handling with much care). We herein show that high density (up to 200 ppm) N2O5 with high selectivity can be produced exclusively from air with electric power consumption (<100 W) for discharge plasmas. The nitrating action of the N2O5-rich plasma effluent gas on tyrosine, an essential amino acid, was demonstrated. The presented synthesis only with air and electricity allowing for ubiquitous N2O5 and other species supply could be a breakthrough for scientific and industrial applications.
