This highlight review describes the deoxygenative coupling of carbonyl compounds, starting with a brief historical presentation of stoichiometric reactions (McMurry coupling), then high-lighting the efforts to develop catalytic reactions, and finally several examples of reactions without the use of transition metals. When available, intermolecular reactions and cross-coupling reactions of two different carbonyl compounds are highlighted.
