Hydrolytic Sludge Digestion by Direct Steam Injection
During the fermentation of sewage sludge about half of the organic components are converted to biogas by microbes before it gets recycled. The bioavailability of the organic components for fermentation can be increased by a treatment process such as the thermal pressure hydrolysis as presented in this article. The hydrolytic sludge digestion uses direct steam to heat up the biomass. Thus, the fouling of the surfaces transmitted by thermal energy can be avoided. The concept is presented and first experimental results and application examples are shown.
