Additive manufactured new hybrid high entropy alloys derived from the AlCoFeNiSmTiVZr system
Several million high entropy alloys (HEAs) are possible just using the combination of similar to 37 main elements. However, the HEA count in the literature hardly exceeds 450. Hence, a great need and opportunity exist with an objective of producing robust and durable alloys. Though various equiatomic HEAs have been explored, efforts in the direction of the utility of lanthanides/rare earth elements and refractory elements with the combination of 3d transition metals and aluminum have not been well-established. In order to further explore such alloys, several new hybrid HEAs namely AlCoFeNiV0.9Sm0.1, AlCoFeNiSm0.1TiV0.9, AlCoFeNiSm0.05TiV0.95Zr, and a bulk metallic glass AlCoFeNiTiVZr were manufactured using the selective laser melting technique. Most of these alloys are single phase FCC (face-centered cubic) structures as revealed by X-Ray diffraction analysis and other characterization techniques. These alloys exhibit excellent mechanical and corrosion resistant properties as revealed by first principles based calculations and experimental examinations.
