DEM studies of polydisperse wet granular flows
This paper investigates the flow behavior of polydisperse dry and wet particles over a single blade. Simulation studies of dry and wet granular flows were performed using the discrete element method (DEM). Comparison of results for dry and wet systems revealed that velocity fields for dry and wet granular flows vary significantly from each other. Velocity fluctuations were more pronounced in the case of wet granular flows. A strong heap formation was observed for wet particles as a result of cohesion and liquid bridge formation. Mixing performance with respect to blade-rake angle and bed-height was also investigated. A more efficient mixing performance was indicated for smaller bed-heights and blade-rake angles from 80 degrees to 90 degrees. Analysis of mixing quality showed higher mixing rates for the wet granular flows in comparison with the dry cases as diffusive mixing is increased due to higher velocity fluctuations in the wet case. Therefore, a higher mixing performance was observed for wet granular flows. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
