On the Field Relevance of Negative Lug Corrosion by Micro-Hybrid Operation Mode in the Vehicle
For lead acid batteries with not-fixed battery acid (so-called "flooded batteries"), there have been reports about a new deterioration mechanism, for some time, namely corrosion of the negative lugs. This can be produced under laboratory conditions by artificial pulse sequences that discharge with high currents. The contribution contrasts these findings with measurements on starter batteries with reference electrodes under real start pulse loads. The results shown here do not lead to the conclusion that stop/start will lead to increased problems with negative lug corrosion.
