Activation of Al powder with NaCl-assisted milling for hydrogen generation
Hydrogen generation by the reaction of Al-NaCl mixtures with water was investigated over the 30-70 degrees C temperature range. 5, 10, and 20 wt% of NaCl were added to Al powder and ground by planetary ball milling. The addition of NaCl activated the powders and prevented cold welding of Al powders during ball milling process. Smaller particle size and deformed microstructure accelerated the corrosion rate of aluminum with water. The results showed that 20 wt% NaCl, 12 h ball milling time, and 70 degrees C reaction temperature effectively enhanced the hydrogen generation rate of the powders.
