Catalytic H-2 auto transfer amination of polyols to alkyl amines in one pot using supported Ru catalysts
One pot catalytic H-2 auto transfer amination of glycerol to alkyl amines is reported for the first time using supported Ru catalysts. It is found that, compared to other noble metal catalysts, Ru/C catalyst exhibits a remarkable activity and selectivity for conversion of glycerol and sorbitol to alkyl amines in the aqueous phase. Detailed experimental studies show that catalyst support, reaction temperature and pressure have significant effects on conversion and selectivity towards alkyl amines on Ru/C catalyst. Based on the observed product distribution, two major reaction pathways, including dehydrogenation, amination and hydrogenation of polyols, ammoniation and ring opening of piperazines, are proposed.
