Complex Oscillatory Kinetics in the Electro-Oxidation of Glucose on Gold
The electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose is relevant from fundamental and applied, viz. fuel cell and sensors, perspectives. Understanding mechanistic details of this reaction is of paramount importance for further practical developments including the rational design of catalysts. In this article we present and discuss the, previously unreported, occurrence of oscillatory reaction rates during the electro-oxidation of D-(+)-glucose on polycrystalline gold, in alkaline medium. The system was studied by cyclic voltammetry, chrono-amperometry/potentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Very rich dynamics under potentio- and galvanostatic regimes and in a wide parameter window was observed. Oscillations' frequencies spanning four orders of magnitude and distinct amplitudes and potential windows characterized the dynamics. Mechanistic aspects as well as implications of oscillatory kinetics in energy conversion and sensing systems are also presented. (C) 2017 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
