Effects of incorporated imine functionality and dispersed nano zinc oxide particles on antimicrobial activity synthesized by RAFT polymerization
Xanthate-mediated block copolymers of butyl acrylate with varying concentrations of glycidyl methacrylate, i.e., 3, 5, 10, and 12 % having fixed molecular weight, i.e., 15,000, were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. To incorporate imine functionality in block polymers, these copolymers were modified by reacting with dicyandiamide followed by the subsequent hydrolysis of nitrile group to generate acid functionality. Generated imine and acid functionalities were utilized to disperse of nano zinc oxide particles in various concentrations (wt%), i.e., 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. These modified copolymers were screened for antimicrobial properties against E. coli and B. subtilis strain by the well-diffusion method. Synthesized xanthate RAFT agent was successfully characterized by FT-IR, (HNMR)-H-1, and GC-MS analysis for structural elucidation. Copolymers and modified copolymer were characterized by FT-IR, (HNMR)-H-1, GPC, and epoxy equivalent analysis. The dispersion of nano ZnO particles in copolymers matrix was confirmed by the TEM analysis.
