Intracluster Charge-Transfer Chemistry in (Mg-Center-Dot(C3H7Oh)(N))(2+) Complexes
The "pickup" technique has been used to generate stable beams of doubly-charged magnesium ions solvated with clusters of n-propanol. In addition to exhibiting a minimum critical size, it is found that the ions undergo a variety of metastable and collision-induced chemical reactions. Although some reactions involve charge separation, these are all accompanied by the breaking of a chemical bond; there is no evidence of direct electron transfer between the metal dication and n-propanol.
