Low Voltage Sodium Intercalation in NaxVxTi1-xO2 (2/ 3 <= x <= 1)
The NaxVixTi(1-x)O(2) (2/3 <= x <= 1) series of layered oxides were synthesized via solid-state synthesis. The resulting oxides were phase pure with the P2 structure for 0.66 <= x <= 0.7 and the O3 structure for 0.8 <= x <= 1.0. In Na cells, sodium was found to intercalate reversibly into these oxides via a low voltage plateau (similar to 0.7 V). This intercalation reaction occurs with very low hysteresis (< 0.06 V). The largest low voltage capacity was observed for the x = 2/3 composition, corresponding to a reversible capacity of 103 mAh/g or 392 Ah/L, when cycled between 0.005 and 1.6 V.
