Chromatographic analysis of extracts isolated from different poplar species as potential inhibitors of enzymatic hydrolysis
Mass and chem. compns. of exts. obtained by sequential leaching of wood chips and bark of poplar (3 species) in Soxhlet app. with H2O, then with EtOH or with cyclohexane (followed with EtOH) were detd. The amts. of exts. from bark of particular poplar species were 2-7 times higher than the quantities obtained from wood. The min. quantity of the exts. with respect to the initial amts. of wood were obtained for Populus trichocarpa H. for both methods. The exts. from bark of this poplar species obtained by using cyclohexane and EtOH contained trichocarpine and salicylic acid while those obtained by using water and EtOH contained trichocarpine only. The exts. from Populus nigra L. contained guajol while the exts. from Populus maximowiczi H contained beta-sitosterol. The exts. can be considered as inhibitors for enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides from wood biomass.
