Axially Symmetric Continuous Domain Vertical Aligned LCD: Poincare Sphere Analysis of Brightness Enhancement by Using Circular Polarizer
This paper proposes a novel vertical alignment liquid crystal display with a structure having the axially symmetric continuous domain. By stacking a pair of crossed circular polarizer, the brightness could be dramatically enhanced compared with stacking a pair of crossed liner polarizer instead. The Jones matrixes calculation results and Poincare sphere analysis illuminate that the transmission depends only on the phase retardation, but has no relationship with the orientations of the LC molecules. Thus the continuous domain vertical alignment LCDs provides a more uniform display performance at various viewing angles, hence, the best wide-viewing angle performance.
