The effect of shearing on the phase retardation of banana liquid crystals
The phase retardation of several banana type liquid crystals in their B-1 and B-2 phases is measured using a temperature controlled shear cell. In different phases the LC-cells are sheared to improve their order and the phase retardation before and after shearing is compared. It is shown that the phase retardation increases and the domain size enlarges as a result of shearing.
