Preparation and properties of pelletized activated carbon using coconut char and pitch binder
In this work, we prepared and characterized pellet-shaped ACs using the coconut shell with K2CO3 and coal tar pitch as the binder to comparison with other granule-shaped ACs. Also effects of activation temperature and time on the process yields and qualities of the product were investigated at the activation temperatures of 750, 800, 850℃ respectively. In order to investigate the physical properties, we obtained adsorption isotherms, methylene blue adsorption number, iodine value, specific surface area(SBET) and pore analysis. The adsorption isotherms of liquid nitrogen vs. relative pressure (P/Po) on the pellet typed ACs at temperature (77K) show the same trend of Type I ; Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The iodine value was 998mg/g, methylene blue adsorption number was 199mg/g, average pore size was below 20Å, and specific surface area(SBET) was 1010㎡/g with the total yield about 29 wt% on pellet-shaped ACs prepared at the activation temperature of 850℃ and activation time 90min. In this paper it was described the data of this experimental and analysis.
