The factors that allow the synthesis of YBa2Cu4O8 at low oxygen pressures are discussed. The importance of having a homogeneous distribution of initial reacting powders to increase the reaction speed and purity of the final product is shown. Compounds with partial and total substitution of yttrium by thulium are also considered.
